J.L. Akerman journal, 1849 September 23 - 1854 February 1.

Record of his voyage from Boston to California around the Horn, on board the Daniel Webster, with names of other passengers and extensive description of Rio de Janeiro; arrival in San Francisco Apr. 29, 1850; experiences gold mining in various locations; travels in California, with descriptions of mining communities; work in theaters in San Francisco, Grass Valley and Nevada City as prompter, scenery painter, etc.; comments on theatrical events. Pencil and ink sketches of Cape Horn and mining camps included. Two pages of accounts at the end of the volume and draft of a letter written from Ipswich, Mass. 1857.
